Legong Condong - Balinese Dance
Legong Condong (leh.gung chon.dhong)
Performed by Dhita Viantono
at Asian Culture Night, San Pedro
In legends, Legong is the heavenly dance
of divine nymphs. Of all classical Balinese dances,
it remains the quintessence of femininity and grace.
The Legong follows (loosely) a story about
a princess, a king, a kidnapping, and a bird of omen.
It tells the story of Princess Rangkesari,
who is held prisoner by King Lakesmi.
Her brother, Prince Daha, gathers an army
to rescue her. To avoid war she tries to persuade
the King to release her. He refuses. On the way
to battle Daha is attacked by a raven,
a bad omen. He dies in battle.
The dance ends at the point the king departs for battle.
